While we’re able to visualise wonderful things in Data Studio with an ever-growing list of connectors, one thing we still couldn’t do is calculating the percentage of one funnel step to another. But now we can!
This method creates a blended chart by automatically combining data from two charts, but the charts selected can’t have blended data sources. Here is an example of how it’s going to look:
Let’s get started and create your ratio metrics in two easy steps:
Select the charts you want to create the ratio metric. Data Studio creates the ratio in A/B format, so the first chart selected will be the A, and second chart the B. In the example I’ve selected Payment first, then Your Info.
Right click, and select Blend data from the menu.
One caveat is that the ratio metric mimics the background colour of the first chart selected. They cannot have individual background colours at the time of writing.
If you change your mind on the order of the ratio metric, simply edit the metric and swap the formula around. Do keep in mind that the metric has to be renamed manually, so it might be more straightforward to create a new ratio metric.
If you’re new to creating funnels, here’s how to build one. I’ve put together 4 Scorecards with Unique Page Views as the metric, and my goal is to monitor the checkout steps.
To rename the Scorecards hover and click on the little box beside the metric name. It turns into a pencil.
Then type in a name for each funnel step in the window pop-up. You’re still able to keep track of the metric source as it’s labelled Source Field under ‘Name’. This is really handy to rewrite a metric name without going into the data source.
Lastly to ensure I’m only looking at unique page views for each checkout step, I’m adding a page filter.
Now you’re all set to create funnels and ratio metrics together, like the one of the world’s greatest pairings, ham and cheese.
